Basketball Tournament & Eat Meet Greet Capture Honors

St. George Knights of Columbus members selected the 2006 January Basketball Tournament as the event of the year --- while Joe Blocker's creation -- the Eat, Meet,
Greet Event that captured the hearts and soul of 5 of our 12 meetings was given a special "Spirit" Award by Grand Knight Bill Zortman.
Mike Whalen who has chaired our now regionally renowned Quarterly Breakfasts was voted the Knight of the Year. Whalen's leadership for the breakfast feast
reached not only the stomachs but the minds of the 60 member 11739 Council.
Gilbert and Rosemary Mohrhauser were chosen the 2005-2006 Family of the Year. The Mohrhausers continue to lead the Parish Family Organization that includes
every family throughout the year. They are instrumental in the religious education and Gilbert has served 11 years as Treasurer of the Knights of Columbus.
Andy Perrion and George Pelletier were named Co-officers of the year. Andy continues to provide the "best" Financial Secretary support of any Council in South Dakota. Four years in a row -- St. George Knight's have been sighted for Elite Status. George has worked his way up through the ranks of the Knights and will serve as
Grand Knight in 2006-2007. He was Deputy Grand Knight in 2005-2006 and Chancellor in 2004-2005.
Marty Auble continued to provide leadership as Chairman of the January Basketball Tournament. The tournament -- at Tri-Valley -- continues to be the number one -- single -- event that provides finances for Knight's projects. Co-chairs -- Lonnie Johnson, Bill Pearson, Gilbert Mohrhauser, and Mike Whalen were also thanked with plaques.
Two of the three scholarship winners attended the Annual Banquet -- for the first time at the Parish Center as a Steak Fry. Ashley Johnson and James McMahan thanked the Council for the $500 scholarships and vowed not to forget the Knights. Kyle Johnson was on a family vacation in Arizona and could not attend.
Past Grand Knight Bill Pearson introduced a new vocation video to the 45-50 that attended. The very modern depiction of the priest and the need for us to claim them
as our gateway to the next world --- was shown for the first time at St. George and to a Knights of Columbus local council.
Father David Desmond responded to the video and made us all appreciate the importance of having a priest for not only the sacraments but for our daily lives. Father David joined us on his 42nd birthday.

The St. George's Knights of Columbus Council in Hartford was proud to
present the 6th annual scholarship to three graduating seniors from our
parish.  The three, $500 scholarships were given in homor and memory of
Monsignor John McEneaney who passed away February 16, 2006.

Recipients are pictured left to right:  James McMahon, son of Tim and Pat
McMahon; Ashley Johnson, daughter of Mike and Deb Johnson; and Kyle Johnson,
son of Lonnie and Nancy Johnson.

Kids, Families Big Winners at Knight's Basketball Bash

The Hartford Knight's of Columbus --- once a year trade in their farm tools, blue collars, sales suits, and day-to-day doings -- to host a charity elementary school basketball tournament. Some have ties to West Central -- others to Tri-Valley. What possesses these Knight's of Columbus to bring to work for weeks to bring 5th and 6th graders and their families from Colton, Hartford, Humboldt, Parker, Crooks, Mitchell, Huron, Brookings, Brandon, Canton, Sioux Falls, Sioux City and Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Hills, Minnesota?
The kids!!! The smiles on the faces of those playing --- their parents and grandparents for a family-friendly atmosphere. And the kids that the proceeds will benefit in scholarships, church needs, and area organizations in need of help.
Some Knights donate meat, others chips, one organization donated the vanilla ice cream --- and they find coaches, students, and out of shape Knight's to referee and work with the kids on dribbling, passing, sportsmanship and winning or losing.
Admission prices, concession charges, and tournament entry fees are designed to attract those that want to have fun and not spend the farm doing it.
On Saturday January 28th -- 23 teams started playing at 8AM and the Knight's and their families were cleaning it out by 8PM. Each team was guaranteed 3 games -- and six of the seven 6th grade girls teams played four games.
The Huron Hoopsters were the only team to win four games. The girls defeated Canton 33-24 in the finals. West Central finished 6th losing the 5th place game to Mitchell Gold 38-18.
The Sioux Falls Irish won the 6th grade boys division defeating an out-sized -- but gutsy Tri-Valley team 49-36 in the finals. The West Central Lightning Bolts won the consolation bracket (5th) place with a win over the Brandon Cats.
The Saders Gold --- one of two teams from Heelan in Sioux City -- captured the 5th grade boys title with a 51-27 victory over the Thrashers from Sioux Falls. The Tri-Valley Mustangs stopped Sader Blue in the 3rd place game and the West Central Wizards outlasted the Parker Pheasants for 7th place.
The St. George Knight's of Columbus will use part of the funds to present 2 scholarships in May graduating seniors.
Looking to get entered in 2007? Tournament will be held either January 20th or 27th. Until then -- the Knights will put their whistles away and return to their families, day to day duties, and helping where Knight's are needed.

Knight's Breakfast Buffet --- Come to the Table of Plenty

Mike Whallen and Mike Jesse enjoy leading the St. George Knight's of Columbus through the smell of bacon, simmering sausages, egg bakes, biscuits and gravy, fruit cup, preparations for a dozen loaves of bread, and drinks that take up a table of their own.
You hear a whistling --- and its Mike Jesse humming -- "God Will Provide, for all that we need -- here at the Table of Plenty."
That's what happens at least four times a year --- and as the song goes -- many do come without money --- others contribute in the "Free Will" offering. But regardless of what is contributed ---- the money goes to Knight's of Columbus projects -- including Senior High School Scholarships that provide funds for needy graduates heading off for career education.
Mike Whalen has become the "permanent" chair of this event -- and generally you'll see two dozen or so Knight's supporting his drive to make this "A Table of Plenty" and a place where parish families can sit, visit, and enjoy fantastic fellowship. What also is not known -- are the number of families that have donated meat, eggs, and more to this special meal. The Knights thank everyone for their generosity.
So when is the Quarterly Breakfast? Generally speaking its always in the St. George Parish Bulletin --- but you can look at the 2nd Sunday of the Quarter. Next event --- tentatively set for April 8th.
The St. George Knight's of Columbus have become the Men's Club in the parish --- and encourages men to join and give back to your parish family. Just see one of the 60 Knights and they'll help you through the process that can provide -- "A Table of Plenty", Scholarships, St. Nick's Day, special thank yous for our Alter Servers, and many other programs at St. George.
